Firstly i am taking a huge sorry to all if somebody reads this article and gets hurt. I am not going to deep aspects of this subject , as i am not an expert in politics and all legal things related about the subject. I am a Physiotherapist and why i feel that not the physios but the people in India deserves a Independent Physio council.
Firstly What is Physiotherapy? it is one of the branch of modern medicine which treats patients without prescribing medicine or surgery. So next question – what are Physios using for treatment? We are using Therapeutic Exercise (most important word in physiotherapy) and some physical agents such as Galvanic/Faradic electrical stimulations, Cryo/Heat therapy, Ultrasound etc. We can take steps to prevent diseases and we can rehabilitate the patient to his best possible normal life.
Physiotherapy Education – we are studying four years in UGC accredited universities and after that we are doing 6 months mandatory internship in different departments in hospitals (almost same duration as MBBS). After Bachelor we can go for 2 year specialization in any of subjects like ortho.neuro, cardio etc.
What are the things Physios can do – as per WHO Physios can assess patients through physical diagnosis and treat patients independently.
What are the things Physios can’t do – We Physios cannot do surgeries and prescribe medicines.
OK then now the major part – Why India deserves a independent Physiotherapy council? Very simple answer to improve the standard of profession so that every Indian citizens should get some quality Physiotherapy treatment. People are paying fees and also taxes so why don’t they deserve some quality treatment? Every private and public Physiotherapy clinics in India must have basic standards.
India is one of the countries which provide worst health care to its citizens. India is a developing nation – nor underdeveloped neither developed. So what is the meaning of developing – We are on the way to get developed like USA, like Canada, like Europe, like Australia. If we look at all countries they are giving the best medical treatment to their citizens and all countries mentioned above the Physiotherapy profession is regulated.
Here some people doesn’t even have any education related to health are giving Physio treatment in some rural areas. what will happen if people who doesn’t have qualification- the condition is going get worsens in most case scenarios. People can think the danger behind this. also in some areas i have heard that some Physios are prescribing medicines. It is not at all fair. Definitely the common people deserve better. Only the way to stop these type of crimes (i call it crimes) is the profession needs to get regulated. An Independent council which have some passionate and well deserving individuals in top can only manage this and work towards betterment of the profession.
I have seen that some well educated people who comes directly to physio treatment. why? May be they are aware that Physiotherapy can produce sufficient results without high side effects. They know the importance. These awareness should be reach to all people and also Physiotherapy need to get accessible to all.
We are assessing the patients through manual methods. We are not assigned to prescribe medicines. We do our job. We are primary care health providers in all developed nations. Many Indian educated Physios are successfully get licensed and working as primary health care providers in g7 nations. So why not in India? Some doctors are even prescribing what type of Physio treatment need to given to patient? How should you know more detailed than a Physio who studied four and half years only about this. Doctors do their job, We do our job, Nurses do their job then only the people get benefited.
One of my colleague who is working abroad had told me that the first thing you need to change is the attitude towards patients. Many health professionals are very arrogant towards the patients which is a serious crime in other nations. He really pointed a great point, surely the ethics of health professional need to get improved. How? again it is pointing towards regulation of professions in health care.
Kerala government had ordered that Physio therapists cannot treat patients on their own and will not provide independent Council. The reason was the govt is going through economic crisis so giving independent council will become an economic burden. Taking a burden which is going to benefit the common people is the responsibility of govt in my opinion.
India is a country which shares 1 in 7 of total world population. Lets take the field of sports. How may Olympic medals had been won by India? How many football world cups India had participated? You people are thinking how these things are related to my article. If i take an example now Football is developing so fast in India by the introduction of ISL and all where many foreign players are coming to India to play Football. What is the difference many international coaches and others are pointing – the physical fitness of Indian players is very low comparing foreign players. Recently i had read an article in which the trainer of Virat Kohli is telling that Kohli is one of the fittest athlet in world even better than Rafael Nadal. Yes a proud moment. I am not degrading his attitude towards getting fit but the rich Cricket players in India are more accessible to well trained Physios and personal trainers. If we uplift our standards and all athletes not only cricket players get accessed to quality Physio then surely a bright future in sports is waiting for India.
